Welcome to Ancient Music Ireland
The study of music and instruments from ancient times is a relatively new phenomenon.
As a discipline of archaeology it has remained on the periphery; the preserve of a small number of dedicated enthusiasts around the World. In recent years however there has been a growing awareness of the importance of the ancient musical instrument collection and the very large contribution it can offer to the knowledge pool of the evolvement and interaction of civilizations.
Surviving complete instruments are relatively rare, yet they reveal much about cultural practices, technological advancement and population migration, but being old delicate and extremely precious they cannot tell us a lot about the music for which they were designed. Ancient Music Ireland has been established to further explore very old instruments by making exact copies or reproductions using the same measurements, materials and (where possible) similar manufacturing methods. These may then be explored practised and played at will. Many ancient instruments have been reproduced by Ancient Music Ireland since its inception in 1988 and the resulting sounds and musical discoveries have altered and enriched our perception of what music was in antiquity and the role it fulfilled in old societies. Thus, a fascinating window is opened into the lives of our ancestors and how their musical instruments evolved and influenced those which are played in the many modern disciplines today.
